Manchester United refused playing friendly match at Lagos stadium – Odegbami

by admin

Segun Odegbami, the former Super Eagles captain, recently shared insights into Manchester United’s reluctance to participate in a friendly match at Lagos’ Teslim Balogun Stadium, Nigeria. He recounted how the Red Devils declined the invitation to play against an undisclosed team at the stadium.

Odegbami, speaking on Arise TV, recalled his negotiation experience with Manchester United during his time with Globacom, stating, “I went to negotiate with Manchester United to come and play here when I was working with Globacom.” He elaborated further, “We discussed everything, but when they inquired about the venue, Teslim Balogun Stadium’s artificial turf deterred them from coming.”

This refusal, he explained, was due to the stadium’s artificial playing surface, unlike the natural grass pitches typical in European football stadiums. Odegbami stressed the necessity of upgrading Nigerian pitches to natural grass to attract top-tier teams like Manchester United. He emphasized that the quality of the playing field significantly influences the ability to secure international matches, citing past encounters with foreign teams on grass turfs.

Odegbami’s advocacy for enhancing the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) includes upgrading facilities to elevate the league’s standards.
