Nigeria Mourns the Loss of a Cultural Icon and Storyteller
Nigeria has lost one of its most treasured cultural figures, as veteran highlife musician and folklorist, Pa Mike Ejeagha, passed away at the age of 93. The revered artist, known for his philosophical lyrics and preservation of Igbo oral traditions, died peacefully, leaving behind a legacy that spans more than six decades.
Popularly known as “Gentleman” Mike Ejeagha, he was not just a musician, but a custodian of African wisdom. Through his unique blend of music and storytelling, Ejeagha became a household name, using his art to promote moral teachings, societal values, and indigenous knowledge.
Born in Enugu in 1932, Ejeagha rose to prominence in the 1960s and 70s with songs that blended melodious highlife rhythms with didactic narratives. His use of proverbs and parables in native Igbo made his music not only entertaining but also educational. Songs like Uwa Mgbede Ka Mma and Akuko N’Egwu became anthems of cultural pride and philosophical reflection.

He was widely regarded as one of the most influential voices in preserving Igbo culture, often hailed as an intellectual historian and cultural ambassador.
