Imo State’s healthcare system witnessed a notable shift on Thursday, June 26, 2025, as Dr. Chima Iheanyi Oparaji, officially assumed duty as the Chief Medical Director (CMD) of the Imo State Specialist Hospital, Umuguma, Owerri.
His appointment by Governor Hope Uzodimma signals a renewed drive toward enhancing healthcare access and quality across the state.
The leadership transition, held at the hospital’s administrative complex, was marked by order, mutual respect, and forward-looking optimism.
Dr. Oparaji takes over from Dr. Kaunda Ibebuike, who served with distinction and is credited with stabilizing hospital operations and initiating vital improvements during his tenure.
Attended by medical professionals, staff, and media representatives, the ceremony showcased the state’s commitment to continuity and progress in its health sector.
In an emotional farewell speech, Dr. Ibebuike thanked Governor Uzodimma and the people of Imo for their support, stating, “It has been a privilege to serve. I am proud of what we have accomplished, and I am confident that this hospital is in capable hands.”
Following the symbolic handover of institutional documents and keys, Dr. Oparaji addressed the audience with a clear message: his administration will prioritize responsive, patient-centered care, robust infrastructure, and alignment with the state’s healthcare reforms.
“This is a pivotal moment in our health system,” Dr. Oparaji said. “Healthcare is not just about treatment — it’s about trust, innovation, and human dignity. I intend to build on the work already done and lead this hospital into a new chapter of medical excellence.”
A seasoned clinician and respected health administrator, Dr. Oparaji brings years of hands-on experience and strategic insight to the role.
He also emphasized collaboration with key state initiatives, particularly the Imo State Health Insurance Agency (IMSHIA), also known as ImoCare, which has provided free medical coverage to over 2.7 million residents.
“Our hospital is ready to function as a primary referral hub for the ImoCare program,” he declared. “We are not just serving Owerri — we are serving the entire Southeast region with dignity and purpose.”
He pledged to work closely with hospital staff and stakeholders to implement specialized treatments, improve service delivery systems, and ensure that healthcare becomes both accessible and affordable for all.
Dr. Oparaji ended his address with an appeal to the public: “To every Imolite and resident seeking professional and affordable healthcare, this is your hospital. We are here for you — and we will rise together.”
