The Rebuild Imo Movement (RIM), a prominent political structure founded by former Governor Rt. Hon. Emeka Ihedioha, on August 1, 2025, held a significant gathering in Owerri to mark the 59th birthday of former Deputy Governor Rt. Hon. Gerald Alphonsus Irona. The event also served as a political rallying point, as the group formally declared its alignment with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and its readiness to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 Imo State governorship election.
Though Irona was absent, the event drew notable political stakeholders, party faithful, and grassroots supporters who celebrated his leadership and legacy. RIM Director General, Chief Dr. Vin Odokwu, described Irona as a humble, visionary leader and confirmed that the movement will fully support Ihedioha under the ADC platform in 2027. He expressed optimism about reclaiming the state’s leadership.
ADC South East Zonal Vice Chairman, Sir Bon Unachukwu, reinforced the party’s preparedness to offer a people-focused alternative and applauded the RIM-ADC alliance as a credible force. Goodwill messages from local and diaspora coordinators, including UK/Europe representative Sir Barr. Chuks Ogbonna, projected a victorious return to Douglas House by 2027.
Rt. Hon. Gerald Irona, born August 1, 1966, is a seasoned public servant and chemical engineer whose political career spans from local governance to the federal legislature and the office of Deputy Governor. Known for his work in oil sector reforms and grassroots development, he remains a respected voice in Imo politics.
The event concluded with cultural displays, prayers, and unity among attendees, reinforcing the growing momentum of the ADC-RIM coalition ahead of the 2027 governorship race.
