In a surprise development, Professor Mahmood Yakubu has officially stepped down from his position as Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), one month before the end of his tenure. He handed over leadership to Mrs. May Agbamuche-Mbu, who will serve as Acting Chairman pending the appointment of a substantive replacement.

The announcement was made during a meeting with INEC’s Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja. In his address, Yakubu cited constitutional provisions and the need for a smooth leadership transition as reasons for his early exit. His tenure was originally set to end in November 2025.

Yakubu, who served as INEC Chairman for nearly a decade, expressed gratitude to stakeholders across the electoral process, including political parties, civil society, security agencies, and the media. He also commended INEC staff for their commitment to electoral reforms during his leadership, noting major achievements such as the introduction of biometric voter registration, electronic transmission of results, and other digital innovations.

May Agbamuche-Mbu, the most senior National Commissioner at INEC by date of appointment, was named Acting Chair following internal consultations. Prior to this transition, she chaired the commission’s Legal Services, Clearance and Complaints Committee. Her appointment is in line with INEC’s internal succession procedures.

President Bola Tinubu has accepted Yakubu’s decision and, in recognition of his service, conferred on him the national honour of Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON). The President also endorsed Agbamuche-Mbu’s acting leadership role until a new chairman is formally appointed and confirmed.

This leadership change comes at a sensitive time, as INEC is preparing for several key elections, including the Anambra governorship poll, the FCT Area Council elections, and early groundwork for the 2027 general elections. Stakeholders have urged the commission to maintain continuity and uphold its commitment to credible and transparent elections.
