President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the recruitment of 30,000 additional police officers in a major effort to improve security and expand the capacity of the Nigeria Police Force. The decision comes as the country continues to face rising security challenges and a shortage of personnel in many parts of the nation.
The Ministry of Police Affairs explained that the new recruitment is part of a wider plan to reform the police and restore public confidence in law enforcement. Many communities, especially in rural areas, have repeatedly complained about limited police presence. The government hopes that the new officers will help close these gaps and improve response to security incidents.
This development follows the recent decision by the federal government to withdraw police officers from VIP escort duties. The plan is to redeploy more officers to core policing functions while also bringing in new recruits to strengthen operations on the ground. Together, these steps mark a major restructuring aimed at improving security delivery nationwide.
There are, however, concerns about the state of police training facilities. Several training centers across the country have been described as overstretched or in poor condition. Security experts warn that without adequate training infrastructure, it may be difficult to properly prepare such a large number of new officers. The government has acknowledged this challenge and announced plans to upgrade these institutions.
Security analysts have generally welcomed the recruitment approval, noting that it may reduce the pressure currently placed on serving officers. They believe that if the process is handled properly, it could greatly improve policing, community safety, and crime prevention.
The Inspector General of Police has praised the presidents approval, calling it a significant step toward modernizing the Nigeria Police Force. The recruitment process is expected to begin soon, and the Ministry of Police Affairs has promised a transparent and merit based selection system.
