Former Kaduna Central Senator Shehu Sani has expressed strong skepticism over President Bola Ahmed Tinubu directive to withdraw police personnel from providing security for Very Important Persons across the country. Sani stated that the plan, though commendable, may end up as another unfulfilled announcement unless backed by firm political will and consistent enforcement.
He noted that similar directives were issued by previous Inspectors General of Police but were later abandoned due to political pressure and the unwillingness of influential individuals to give up special security privileges. According to him, such promises have become a repeated pattern in which authorities make public declarations that are rarely carried out in practice.
Sani also raised concerns about what he described as the increasing diversion of the Nigeria Police Force, especially the Mobile Police, to escort duties for VIPs instead of focusing on community security. He argued that returning officers to regular policing roles would strengthen national security and improve the fight against rising crime across the country.
The former lawmaker added that real reform will require more than public directives. It will demand courage to resist pressure from powerful persons and ensure that police officers are deployed to areas where they are truly needed. Only then, he said, will citizens feel the benefits of a police force dedicated to public safety rather than the protection of a privileged few.
His remarks have added momentum to the ongoing national debate on police resources, VIP protection, and the urgent need to restructure the countrys security system.
