Igbo elders have appealed to the Anambra State Governor, Prof.
Chukwuma Soludo, to suspend or reconsider the planned demolition of shops at the Onitsha Main Market, warning that the move could lead to severe economic hardship for traders and their families.
The appeal was made by the United Igbo Elders Council Worldwide following reports that about 10,000 shops have been marked for demolition, with traders given a 14-day ultimatum to vacate the affected areas.
In a statement addressed to the governor, the elders acknowledged the government’s responsibility to enforce order and urban planning regulations but described the timeline for the exercise as too short and potentially disruptive, considering the number of livelihoods involved.
They noted that Onitsha Main Market is one of the largest commercial centres in the region, supporting thousands of traders, transporters, artisans and other service providers across the South-East and beyond. According to the group, many of the affected shop owners acquired their spaces through approved channels and have consistently contributed to state revenue.
The elders cautioned that a sudden demolition without adequate consultation, compensation or relocation arrangements could worsen economic pressure on traders who are already facing rising costs and recent market disruptions.
They therefore urged the state government to engage more deeply with stakeholders, extend the relocation timeline and provide practical alternatives that would balance urban renewal efforts with the welfare of traders.
The Anambra State Government has maintained that the planned demolition targets illegal structures and is part of efforts to restore order within the market. However, the development has continued to attract mixed reactions, with growing calls for dialogue and consensus.
