Hope Uzodinma has declared that Nigeria’s democracy can only remain strong when opposition parties are vibrant, organised, and capable of challenging the ruling government effectively.

Speaking during the presidential primary of the All Progressives Congress, the Imo State governor urged opposition parties to strengthen their structures and reconnect with the grassroots ahead of the 2027 general elections.

According to Uzodinma, democracy loses its true meaning when there is no credible opposition to provide alternatives and hold leaders accountable. He encouraged rival political parties to emulate the organisational strategies and grassroots mobilisation that have strengthened the APC across the country.

The governor also praised the party’s electronic membership registration and validation exercise, describing it as a major step toward inclusiveness and wider political participation. He said the impressive turnout at the primary reflects the growing strength and unity of the APC nationwide.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu received overwhelming support during the primary, further reinforcing the party’s confidence ahead of the next election cycle.

Uzodinma’s comments have sparked fresh conversations about the future of Nigeria’s democracy, the importance of healthy political competition, and the role opposition parties must play in strengthening democratic governance across the nation.
