In a significant boost to global counterterrorism efforts, United States airstrikes carried out in coordination with Nigerian authorities successfully disrupted planned terrorist attacks that were intended to take place during the Christmas season in Nigeria, a US Congressman has said.
According to the lawmaker, the precision air operations targeted Islamic State (ISIS/ISIL)–linked camps in Nigeria’s northwest, neutralising key militant positions and preventing imminent attacks on civilians during a period traditionally marked by peace and celebration. The intervention, he noted, likely saved countless lives and protected vulnerable communities.
The strikes, conducted on Christmas Day, were part of a broader security partnership between the United States and Nigeria, built on intelligence sharing and joint planning. Nigerian officials confirmed that the operation was carried out with the full knowledge and consent of the Nigerian government, underscoring respect for national sovereignty and strong bilateral cooperation.
US officials described the operation as a decisive action against extremist groups responsible for years of violence, kidnappings, and instability across parts of Nigeria. The Congressman praised the professionalism of both US and Nigerian forces, calling the mission a clear example of how international collaboration can deliver real security outcomes.
Security analysts say the successful disruption of the planned attacks highlights the importance of proactive counterterrorism measures, especially during periods when civilians are most at risk.
The operation has been widely viewed as a morale boost for communities affected by insurgency and a warning to terrorist groups that their activities will not go unchecked.
As Nigeria continues its fight against violent extremism, the Christmas Day operation stands as a strong reminder of the power of partnership, timely intelligence, and decisive action in safeguarding lives and promoting stability.
