Back Tinubu in 2027, Presidency Will Return to North in 2031 — Joe Igbokwe

A prominent chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Joe Igbokwe, has urged Northern Nigerians to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election, assuring that power will shift back to the North in 2031. His remarks add to the growing political discourse surrounding future elections and regional power balance in Nigeria.

Igbokwe based his appeal on the long-standing principle of zoning, an informal arrangement designed to ensure fairness and inclusiveness by rotating the presidency between the North and the South. He argued that since the presidency is currently held by the South, it would be just and politically strategic for the North to support Tinubu’s second-term ambition.

According to him, such support would not only strengthen national unity but also position the North favorably to reclaim the presidency in the next political cycle. He emphasized that honoring this rotational understanding would help maintain balance and reduce political tension across regions.

His comments come amid early political alignments and conversations ahead of the 2027 elections, even though the electoral season is still some years away. Political observers note that statements like this are often aimed at building alliances and shaping expectations among key voting blocs.

While Igbokwe’s position reflects his personal and party perspective, it underscores the continued influence of zoning in Nigeria’s political landscape and the strategic negotiations that often define the country’s electoral process.
