Cardinal John Onaiyekan has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to focus on properly equipping and supporting Nigeria’s current crop of security operatives as the country continues to struggle with persistent insecurity.

Speaking on the recurring wave of kidnappings, banditry, insurgency, and violent crimes across different regions, the respected Catholic cleric expressed concern that many communities still live in fear despite multiple government efforts. He noted that the situation calls for urgent action to strengthen the nation’s security architecture.

Onaiyekan stressed that security personnel cannot perform effectively without modern equipment, adequate training, improved welfare, and the operational tools needed to confront criminal activities. He stated that boosting the capacity and morale of the forces on ground is essential for achieving meaningful progress in the fight against insecurity.

According to him, a well-resourced and motivated security system is key to restoring public confidence and ensuring that Nigerians feel safe in their homes, on the roads, and within their communities. He urged the Tinubu administration to make the welfare and empowerment of security operatives a top priority, noting that peace and stability remain the foundation for national development and unity.

The cleric reiterated that addressing insecurity should remain at the forefront of national discourse, as it directly affects economic growth, education, agriculture, and the overall well-being of citizens.
