NBA vs Police: Tint War Heats Up as Police Accuse Bar of Misleading Nigerians

Abuja, December 19, 2025 – The battle over Nigerias controversial vehicle-tinted glass permit policy has escalated, with the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) accusing the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) of deliberately misleading the public.

The NBA had recently criticized the police for resuming enforcement of the tinted glass permit policy, calling it a disregard for the rule of law. The Bar argued that the policy, rooted in a military-era law, is unconstitutional and legally questionable, and warned motorists against paying permits while court challenges remain pending.

But the police fired back, insisting the policy is lawful, security-driven, and not for revenue generation. Spokespersons maintained that there is no court order barring enforcement, rejecting claims that motorists are being harassed or misinformed.

The tinted glass permit policy is in full compliance with the law, and any suggestion that the NBA has accurately represented the legal situation is misleading, a police statement declared.

Legal experts note that while the police claim no legal restraint exists, some courts have issued injunctions in related cases, halting enforcement in certain jurisdictions, highlighting the complex and contested legal landscape.

The dispute underscores a growing tension between security authorities and civil society, with Nigerians caught in the middle over compliance and legality. With enforcement set to resume in January, motorists are left navigating a maze of conflicting directives, legal suits, and public warnings.
