The Federal Government has intensified efforts to secure compensation for Nigerians who suffered losses during the recent attacks on foreign nationals in South Africa, reaffirming its commitment to protecting the lives, businesses, and rights of its citizens abroad.
The Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Sola Enikanolaiye, disclosed that the government has commenced the process of documenting the experiences of affected Nigerians, including details of damaged properties, destroyed businesses, and other financial losses. The information will form the basis of a formal compensation request to the South African authorities.
According to the minister, Nigeria is engaging South Africa through diplomatic channels to ensure justice is served. He explained that both countries have agreed to strengthen cooperation aimed at preventing similar incidents in the future while ensuring that those responsible for the attacks are identified, prosecuted, and held accountable.
The Federal Government also revealed that South Africa has pledged to improve security for foreign nationals and establish an early-warning mechanism to detect and respond to threats before they escalate into violence. This move is expected to enhance the safety of Nigerians living and working in the country.
As part of its response, the Nigerian government has successfully coordinated the evacuation of approximately 1,490 Nigerians who chose to return home following the unrest. Officials noted that some evacuation efforts were supported by private individuals and organisations, while discussions are ongoing to provide additional assistance for citizens who may still wish to return.
The government stressed that every Nigerian, regardless of immigration status, deserves protection and fair treatment under international law. It assured citizens that it would continue to pursue all available diplomatic options to safeguard their interests and seek appropriate compensation for those affected.
President Bola Tinubu’s administration has reiterated that while dialogue remains the preferred approach, Nigeria will not hesitate to explore other lawful avenues should diplomatic engagements fail to produce satisfactory outcomes. The government maintained that the welfare and dignity of Nigerians abroad remain a top priority.
The latest development underscores Nigeria’s determination to defend its citizens beyond its borders while strengthening bilateral relations with South Africa through constructive engagement. Many Nigerians have welcomed the government’s renewed commitment, expressing hope that affected victims will receive justice, compensation, and the support needed to rebuild their lives.
