The recent invasion of the Oyo State Government House by members of the Yoruba Nation group has stirred up a flurry of reactions and raised pertinent questions about the Federal Government’s handling of regional agitations and security breaches.
In a brazen display of defiance, individuals clad in military camouflage stormed the government premises, attempting to seize control and hoist their flags. This blatant act of insurrection, coupled with the breach of security protocols, constitutes a grave threat to the nation’s stability and democratic principles.
What is most alarming, however, is the perceived disparity in the Federal Government’s response when compared to similar incidents in other regions. While the swift condemnation and classification of certain agitations as terrorist activities have become commonplace, the silence surrounding the Oyo invasion is deafening.
It begs the question: Would the reaction be the same if the perpetrators hailed from a different ethnic group? The glaring absence of widespread condemnation, military intervention, or legal proceedings to proscribe the group underscores a troubling trend of tribal bias in the country’s governance.
Had such an audacious incursion occurred in Igbo land, the response would likely have been vastly different. International support, including military aid, would have poured in, and the narrative would have been one of decisive action against terrorism.
Yet, in Oyo State, where the rule of law has been blatantly flouted, there is a conspicuous lack of urgency in addressing the situation. The government’s silence only serves to embolden those who seek to undermine the nation’s unity and territorial integrity.
It is imperative that the Federal Government dispenses justice without prejudice and upholds the principles of equality and fairness in its response to security threats, regardless of the ethnic origins of the perpetrators. Failure to do so not only undermines national cohesion but also perpetuates dangerous divisions along tribal lines.
As the nation grapples with the aftermath of this brazen act, it is crucial that steps are taken to ensure that justice is served, and the perpetrators are held accountable to the fullest extent of the law. Anything less would be a betrayal of the trust placed in the government to safeguard the nation’s interests and uphold the sanctity of its democratic institutions.
