A government-backed workshop meant to fight Gender-Based Violence in Imo State has descended into disgrace, as participants accuse the organizers—led by Director of Women Affairs, Dr. (Mrs.) Blessing Azubuike—of embezzlement, abuse, and inhumane treatment.
Held from July 1 to 3, 2025, at Rockview Hotels in Owerri, the training—backed by UN Women and the Office of the First Lady, Barr. Chioma Ikeaka Uzodimma—was supposed to empower community leaders. Instead, it left them starved, insulted, and outraged.
Despite confirmed funding for meals and welfare, participants reported receiving nothing but neglect and humiliation. While Day 1 began with hotel-catered meals, Day 2 saw a suspicious and sudden shift to external food vendors allegedly linked to Azubuike—resulting in spoiled food, hunger, and chaos.
Traditional leaders from across Imo State described the treatment as “degrading,” accusing Dr. Azubuike of gross misconduct and diversion of public funds. Some say they were mocked and verbally assaulted when they raised concerns. Others claim this isn’t her first offense, pointing to a pattern of corruption within the Ministry.
Even more alarming is the silence—or complicity—of Honourable Commissioner Lady Nkechinyere Ugwu and First Lady Barr. Chioma Ikeaka Uzodimma, whose offices helped coordinate the event. Rather than stepping in to protect the dignity of community leaders, they stood by as the scandal unfolded under their watch.
What was meant to be a symbol of progress for Imo women has instead exposed deep rot, betrayal, and unchecked impunity in the state’s leadership. The people are now demanding answers—not press statements.
