On August 25, 2025, 16-year-old Rio Ngumoha made a sensational Premier League debut for Liverpool, scoring a dramatic 100th-minute winning goal against Newcastle United with his very first touch of the match.
Brought on in the 97th minute, the teenager scored just three minutes later, sealing a 3–2 victory for Liverpool and making history as the club’s youngest-ever Premier League goalscorer. He also became only the second 16-year-old in Premier League history to score a match-winner, alongside Wayne Rooney.
Ngumoha, who was born in England to Nigerian and French parents, joined Liverpool in 2024 after developing in Chelsea’s academy. Earlier in 2025, he had become Liverpool’s youngest-ever starter in a competitive match during an FA Cup game.
Manager Arne Slot praised Ngumoha’s composure, while team captain Virgil van Dijk called it a dream debut. The football world, including Nigerian fans and former players, celebrated the moment widely, with growing interest in whether the young star will represent England, Nigeria, or France at the senior international level.
Ngumoha’s debut has marked the beginning of what could be a major career. His breakthrough is not only a proud moment for Liverpool, but also for African football.
