A passenger train traveling from Kaduna to Abuja derailed on Monday, August 26, 2025, shortly after departing from Rigasa Station. Several coaches overturned, causing panic among passengers. Emergency teams responded quickly to evacuate those on board. While no fatalities have been confirmed, some passengers may have suffered minor injuries.

The Nigerian Railway Corporation stated that investigations are ongoing to determine the cause. Train services on the route have been suspended while safety checks are carried out.

This incident happened just days after the NRC reported a technical issue involving an overheating axle near the same station. Though it was resolved at the time, experts believe it could point to ongoing maintenance challenges.

The Kaduna–Abuja rail line has faced multiple problems in recent years, including past derailments and a deadly train attack in 2022. The latest incident has raised renewed public concern about the safety of Nigeria’s railway system.

Authorities have promised a full investigation and say that services will resume only after safety is confirmed. Many passengers and safety advocates are calling for urgent improvements to rail infrastructure and regular system checks to prevent further accidents.
