The Nigerian Police Force has arrested twelve suspects in connection with a violent armed robbery attack that tragically led to the death of ARISE News presenter Somtochukwu “Sommie” Maduagwu and a private security guard at her residence in Katampe Extension, Abuja.
The incident, which occurred in the early hours of Monday, September 29, 2025, sent shockwaves across the country, prompting swift condemnation from media organisations, civil society groups, and the Presidency.
According to police sources, heavily armed criminals stormed Unique Apartments, a residential complex where the 29-year-old journalist lived. Witnesses reported that the robbers gained entry by overpowering security personnel on duty, shooting one of the guards who later died from his injuries.
In a desperate attempt to escape the attackers, Maduagwu reportedly jumped from the third floor of her apartment. She was found unconscious by neighbours and rushed to Maitama District Hospital, where she later died from complications related to internal injuries sustained during the fall.
The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Commissioner of Police, Ajao Saka Adewale, confirmed the arrest of twelve suspects during a press briefing. He assured the public that investigations were ongoing and that security agencies were fully committed to bringing all those involved to justice.
“This was a senseless and violent attack that claimed the lives of innocent Nigerians. We will not rest until all those responsible are held accountable,” the Commissioner said.
ARISE News described Maduagwu as a passionate and dedicated journalist whose sudden death is a devastating loss to Nigerian media. Her colleagues and friends continue to mourn her, remembering her as a rising star in the broadcast industry who had a bright future ahead.
In the wake of the incident, there have been growing calls for an investigation into claims that Maduagwu was initially denied treatment at the hospital because she arrived without identification. The allegations have sparked public outrage and renewed concerns over Nigeria’s emergency medical response and hospital admission protocols.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu also reacted to the incident, directing security agencies to act swiftly in capturing all those responsible and to intensify efforts to curb the rising wave of violent crime in Abuja and across the country. He extended his condolences to the families of the victims.
“The killing of innocent Nigerians, especially those serving the public, is unacceptable. The culprits must face the full weight of the law,” the President stated.
The tragic circumstances surrounding the death of Somtochukwu Maduagwu have sparked a wider national conversation about urban safety, healthcare accountability, and journalist protection. Human rights organisations and media advocacy groups are urging the government to treat the matter as a turning point for much-needed reform.
