Panic spread across Yagba East on Saturday as gunmen launched a sudden attack along the Isanlu Makutu to Idofin highway, leaving several travellers feared abducted and communities deeply unsettled.
Eyewitnesses said the attackers stormed the road in the afternoon, shooting into the air and causing motorists to run for safety. Many travellers abandoned their vehicles and escaped into nearby bushes as the gunmen advanced along the highway.
The number of abducted persons remains unclear, but early reports suggest that multiple travellers may have been taken. The incident has caused fear across the area, with many residents staying indoors while motorists avoid the route entirely.
This attack adds to a series of violent incidents recently recorded on highways in Kogi State. Days earlier, another ambush in the state led to the rescue of 21 passengers, including women and a nine day old infant, although a soldier and a vigilante lost their lives during the confrontation.
Security observers warn that the repeated assaults show that the security situation in the state is worsening, especially in remote areas where armed groups frequently carry out attacks.
Security operatives have been deployed to the area of the latest incident, though authorities have not released an official statement on the number of victims or the progress of search efforts. More detailed information is expected as investigations continue.
Across the affected communities, residents and local leaders are calling for urgent government action to prevent further attacks and restore safety on major roads.
