Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma has unveiled a ₦1.44 trillion budget proposal that has sent shockwaves across the political and economic landscape of the state, setting a new spending record in Imo history.
Tagged the Budget of Economic Breakthrough, the proposal was presented to the Imo State House of Assembly and represents a 78 percent increase over the states 2025 budget of ₦807 billion, pointing to a sharp shift toward large scale development.
The spending plan departs from conventional budgeting patterns. Only ₦238.5 billion, representing 16.6 percent of the total, is allocated to recurrent expenditure such as salaries and overheads, while ₦1.20 trillion or 83.4 percent is dedicated to capital projects.
The governor linked the expansion to stronger inflows from the Federation Account Allocation Committee, improved internally generated revenue, and a strategy that places infrastructure at the centre of economic growth.
A major focus of the proposal is investment in power infrastructure aimed at reducing dependence on generator powered electricity, alongside road construction, public facilities, and urban renewal projects intended to boost productivity and attract investment.
The scale of the budget has triggered debate across the state. Supporters view it as a turning point, while critics warn that implementation, transparency, and fiscal discipline will determine its outcome.
For residents of Imo State, the ₦1.44 trillion proposal marks a critical moment. Whether it produces lasting economic results will depend on how effectively the plans are carried out.
What is clear is that the budget has placed Imo State firmly in the national spotlight.
