After a prolonged period of internal friction and leadership tussles, lasting peace has finally returned to Awo Autonomous Community in Mbaitoli Local Government Area of Imo State.
This breakthrough follows a high-level reconciliation meeting convened by the Executive Chairman of Mbaitoli LGA, Hon. Ifunanya Lactus Nwanegwo.
The historic peace summit, which took place on Sunday, July 26, 2026, at the premises of Community School, Awo, drew a massive turnout of sons, daughters, community leaders, and key stakeholders eager to witness the rebirth of unity in their homeland.
Addressing the mammoth crowd, Hon. Nwanegwo who is also a prominent indigene of Awo Autonomous Community appealed directly to all aggrieved parties, particularly the warring factions within the town union and its women’s wing, to immediately sheath their swords and embrace genuine peace for the collective progress of the town.
To permanently resolve the underlying leadership disputes, the Council Chairman announced decisive measures aimed at restructuring the community’s governance.
Hon. Nwanegwo revealed that the current executives of both the main town union and the women’s wing will be formally dissolved by December this year to pave the way for fresh, transparent elections.
In a major gesture of goodwill, the Council Chairman promised to personally sponsor and host a unified 2026 Women August Meeting Celebration, positioning the flagship annual event as a symbol of restored sisterhood and harmony.
Reaffirming the traditional hierarchy, Hon. Nwanegwo declared that HRH Eze C.A.C. Eronini remains the sole recognized traditional ruler of Awo Autonomous Community.
He, however, charged the monarch to lead with tolerance, humility, and the spirit of a servant-leader.
Reacting to the development, HRH Eze C.A.C. Eronini commended the Council Chairman for stepping in to broker peace.
The royal father reiterated that the Community’s executive council would indeed be dissolved in the coming months to allow for a seamless transition.
Expressing deep relief and delight, Eze Eronini noted that the return of tranquility marks the beginning of a vibrant new chapter for Awo Autonomous Community, urging all residents to protect the newfound peace and support initiatives aimed at driving local development.
