Former Delta State Governor and former Vice Presidential candidate, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, has declared that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu assumed office at a critical moment in Nigeria’s history, describing him as the leader the country needed to confront its long-standing economic and governance challenges.
Okowa made the remarks while addressing members of the Working People United (WPU) in Asaba, Delta State, where he commended the President’s bold economic reforms and urged Nigerians to remain patient as the policies continue to produce positive results.
According to the former governor, the removal of the fuel subsidy and other key economic measures have improved the financial position of both state and local governments. He noted that many states which previously struggled to pay workers’ salaries and meet basic obligations are now in a better position to fulfil their financial responsibilities.
He also praised the Federal Government’s commitment to expanding access to education through the National Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), stating that the initiative has already provided financial support to about 1.6 million students in tertiary institutions across the country.
Okowa maintained that although the reforms came with initial hardships, they were necessary to reposition Nigeria’s economy for long-term growth. He expressed confidence that the administration’s policies would continue to strengthen public finances, attract investment, create jobs and improve the standard of living for Nigerians.
The former Delta State governor also called on citizens to support President Tinubu’s reform agenda, saying that meaningful national development requires patience, unity and collective sacrifice. He added that the progress already recorded shows that the country is moving in the right direction.
Okowa also said President Tinubu should be given the opportunity to continue the reforms already introduced, expressing optimism that Nigeria’s economy will continue to improve if the current policies are sustained.
His remarks add to the national conversation surrounding the Tinubu administration’s economic reforms, with supporters pointing to improved government revenues and fiscal restructuring, while critics continue to express concerns over the rising cost of living and the pace at which ordinary Nigerians are experiencing the benefits.
