Justice for Comrade Okebaram Stanley Chimaroke
The Imo NANS Comrade Community, on 1st August 2026, paid a condolence visit to the family of the late Comrade Okebaram Stanley Chimaroke, an indigene of Orodo, Mbaitoli Local Government Area of Imo State, who was serving under the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Bassambiri, Nembe Local Government Area of Bayelsa State before his tragic death. According to reports available to us, his body was later found near a river in his host community.
Since this unfortunate incident occurred, we have exercised restraint, expecting the relevant authorities—including the NYSC, the Bayelsa State Government, and the Nigeria Police Force—to commence a thorough, transparent, and result-oriented investigation.
Regrettably, as of 3rd August 2026, to the best of our knowledge, no arrest has been made, no suspect has been publicly identified or invited for questioning, and no meaningful update has been communicated to the bereaved family or the general public.
We ask: Is this how the life of an illustrious son of Orodo, Mbaitoli LGA, Imo State, should be forgotten?
The Imo NANS Comrade Community hereby issues a seven (7)-day ultimatum to the leadership of the Bassambiri Community, Nembe Local Government Area, the NYSC, the Nigeria Police Force, Bayelsa State Command, the Bayelsa State Government, the Imo State Government, and the National Secretariat of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) to ensure that all those responsible for this heinous act are identified through a credible investigation and, where sufficient evidence exists, arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
Failure to demonstrate tangible progress within this seven-day period will compel the Imo NANS Comrade Community to pursue every lawful and legitimate avenue available to demand justice for our fallen comrade.
We are also deeply concerned by reports that the family of the deceased corps member has not yet been granted access to see his remains. If accurate, this development has further compounded the family’s grief and raises important questions regarding the handling of the matter.
We strongly condemn what appears to be the slow and inadequate response of the relevant authorities, particularly the NYSC, in addressing this tragic incident. Every life matters, and every corps member deserves adequate protection while serving the nation.
We therefore call on all corps members, residents of Nembe, and members of the public, especially anyone with credible information relating to this incident, to cooperate fully with the appropriate authorities to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.
Justice delayed must not become justice denied.
