The National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dr. Kabiru Turaki (SAN), has expressed confidence that the opposition party can reclaim power from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general election, despite admitting that the task will not be easy.

Turaki spoke after a closed-door meeting between the PDP’s newly elected National Working Committee (NWC) and former President Olusegun Obasanjo at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL) in Abeokuta, Ogun State. He said the discussions with the former president were frank, inspiring and encouraging for the party’s new leadership.

According to Turaki, the visit was aimed at formally introducing the new PDP leadership to Obasanjo and seeking his guidance, advice and support ahead of the party’s push to return to power. He described Obasanjo as an elder statesman whose experience and role in building democratic institutions remain invaluable to Nigeria.

He noted that the interaction with the former president had further strengthened the party’s resolve, adding that the PDP leadership was now more determined to confront the ruling party, which he accused of incompetence and poor governance.

Turaki also declared that the PDP was fully prepared for the 2027 elections, stating that the party’s readiness would first be demonstrated in the upcoming governorship elections in Ekiti and Osun states. He said victories in both states would signal the party’s resurgence and growing strength nationwide.

Members of the PDP delegation included the Chairman of the party’s Board of Trustees and former Senate President, Senator Adolphus Wabara; the National Secretary, Alhaji Taofeek Arapaja; and former governors Dr. Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu and Senator Jonah Jang.

Addressing party members later at the state secretariat, Turaki called on PDP members across the country to rally behind the new leadership, stressing that internal divisions and impunity would no longer be tolerated under his leadership.

In separate remarks, Wabara and Arapaja urged party faithful to remain united and intensify mobilisation efforts ahead of future elections, saying unity was key to the party’s return to power.

The Ogun State PDP Chairman, Abayomi Tella, described the visit as a morale booster for party members, saying it signalled a fresh start and renewed hope for the party.
