The celebration of Imo State’s 50th anniversary, popularly known as Imo @ 50, has continued to generate reactions across the state following the noticeable absence of some prominent political figures from the official events.
Former Governor Rochas Okorocha, former governorship candidate Uche Nwosu, and another former governor, Achike Udenwa, were among notable personalities who did not attend the high-profile Golden Jubilee activities. Their absence has sparked widespread discussion among residents and political observers, with many interpreting it as a snub of the state government’s invitation.
The Imo @ 50 celebration was organized to mark five decades since the creation of the state in 1976. The programme was expected to bring together past leaders, political stakeholders, and distinguished indigenes to reflect on the state’s journey, assess its progress, and chart a course for the future.
Given their significant roles in Imo State’s political history, expectations were high that former governors and influential political actors would be present at the historic event.
However, their non-appearance has fueled speculation about lingering political divisions and unresolved differences within the state’s political landscape.
As of the time of this report, none of the absent figures has issued an official statement to confirm whether they received formal invitations or to explain the reasons for their absence.
Meanwhile, the Imo State Government has maintained that the Golden Jubilee celebration is aimed at promoting unity, reflection, and renewed commitment to the development of the state.
Despite the celebrations, the absence of these key political figures remains one of the most talked-about aspects of the Imo @ 50 anniversary.
