More than 100 inmates at the Kuje Correctional Centre in Abuja have reportedly spoken out over alleged widespread corruption and extortion within the facility. The inmates claim that some officials routinely demand payments in exchange for access to basic rights, improved living conditions, and other essential services.
According to the allegations, inmates who fail to comply with these financial demands are subjected to punitive measures, including restricted access to medical care, limited visitation privileges, and unfavorable treatment compared to those who are able to pay. The situation, they say, has created deep frustration and inequality within the custodial centre.
The affected inmates are appealing to authorities to investigate the claims thoroughly and take decisive action where necessary. They argue that correctional facilities are meant to promote rehabilitation and fairness, not exploitation.
As of the time of filing this report, the Nigerian Correctional Service has not released an official statement addressing the allegations. Rights advocates are calling for transparency and accountability to ensure that the welfare and dignity of inmates are adequately protected.
