A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has convicted and sentenced former Acting Accountant-General of the Federation, Chukwunyere Anamekwe Nwabuoku, to a total of 72 years imprisonment over a fraud case involving ₦868.46 million.

The conviction followed a case brought by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), which accused Nwabuoku of multiple counts of money laundering and diversion of public funds. The court heard how the funds were allegedly moved through various accounts and entities in an attempt to conceal their origin.

In its judgment, the court found him guilty on several counts and imposed separate prison terms for each offence, which cumulatively amount to 72 years. However, the sentences are expected to run concurrently, meaning the actual time he may spend behind bars could be significantly less than the total figure.

Nwabuoku, who briefly served as Acting Accountant-General in 2022, was responsible for overseeing the management of Nigeria’s federal finances. His conviction represents a significant development in the country’s anti-corruption efforts and underscores the increasing scrutiny of public officials entrusted with managing government resources.

The ruling reinforces the commitment of Nigeria’s judicial system to hold individuals accountable for financial crimes and serves as a warning against abuse of public office.
