A growing wave of concern is emerging within the Peoples Democratic Party as a senior party chieftain has warned that the opposition may find it difficult to challenge Bola Tinubu if Nyesom Wike continues to wield strong influence over its direction.
The warning points to deepening internal divisions within the PDP, with party stakeholders increasingly worried about issues of loyalty, cohesion, and leadership. According to the chieftain, the party’s ability to function as a credible opposition force is being affected by conflicting interests and unresolved disputes among its key figures.
Nyesom Wike, a former governor and one of the most prominent and outspoken members of the PDP, has remained at the center of controversy since the 2023 general elections. His decision to openly support Tinubu, the candidate of the rival All Progressives Congress, created a major rift within the party. That move divided party loyalists and raised questions about discipline and allegiance within the PDP’s ranks.
The party chieftain stated that allowing Wike to maintain a leading role without addressing these concerns could weaken the PDP’s credibility in the eyes of voters. He added that a united front is essential if the party hopes to regain political ground and challenge the ruling party in future elections.
Beyond individual personalities, the situation reflects structural challenges within the PDP. Analysts say the party has struggled to recover from internal crises, leadership tussles, and post-election grievances. Without action to settle differences and rebuild trust among members, the PDP risks entering future electoral contests divided and unprepared.
The warning also highlights the need for the party to redefine its leadership structure and priorities. Many within the PDP believe that clarity of purpose, discipline, and unity will determine whether the party can reposition itself as an alternative to the current administration.
As political activities begin to intensify ahead of future elections, the PDP faces a critical moment. Whether it can resolve its internal conflicts and present a strong challenge to Bola Tinubu and the ruling APC remains uncertain, but the outcome could shape Nigeria’s political landscape in the years ahead.
