The internal crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has taken a dramatic turn, as a faction loyal to former Rivers State governor, Nyesom Wike, unveiled a new set of national leaders ahead of the 2027 general elections. The move signals an intensifying struggle for control within one of Nigeria’s major opposition parties.
At a convention held in Abuja, the Wike-backed bloc announced Abdulrahman Mohammed as its National Chairman and Samuel Anyanwu as National Secretary, alongside other members of a newly formed National Working Committee (NWC). The leaders reportedly emerged through a consensus process among delegates aligned with the faction.
Addressing supporters, Wike said the new leadership is ready to reposition the party and take part in the 2027 polls. He stated that the structure put in place reflects the will of party members within the bloc and is prepared for the tasks ahead.
However, the development is expected to heighten divisions within the PDP. Rival factions, including influential governors and senior stakeholders, have rejected the legitimacy of the Wike-aligned leadership, insisting on a different structure. This has led to parallel authorities within the party, complicating efforts to unify its ranks.
With the 2027 elections approaching, the PDP faces pressure to resolve its internal disputes or risk weakening its position. Analysts warn that continued infighting, legal battles, and competing leadership claims could affect the party’s chances if steps are not taken to restore unity among its members.
