As political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections begin to gather pace, former Mbaitoli Local Government Chairman, Chief Ostia Opara, has officially declared his intention to contest the Owerri Zone senatorial seat. His announcement marks an early entry into what is expected to become a highly competitive race in the coming months.
Opara made his declaration in Owerri during a meeting with political stakeholders, community leaders, and supporters from across the zone. The gathering provided him with a platform to formally present his ambition and outline his vision for effective representation at the National Assembly. He used the opportunity to position himself as a seasoned administrator with both public and private sector experience.
Speaking with journalists after the event, the two-time council chairman explained that his decision to run for Senate stems from a personal desire to return to public service. He stressed that his ambition is driven by conviction rather than external political pressure or influence, portraying himself as an independent-minded candidate focused on service delivery.
He confirmed that he will be contesting under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), while appealing to party leaders, stakeholders, and constituents across Owerri Zone to support his candidacy. According to him, unity and collective effort will be essential to achieving meaningful representation for the district.
Highlighting his qualifications, Opara pointed to his academic background in Marketing, Business Administration, and Project Management, as well as his affiliations with professional institutes. He noted that these credentials, combined with his experience in governance, have equipped him with the knowledge and skills required for legislative responsibilities.
The Mberi-born politician also referenced his previous roles in public service, including his participation in committees at both the state and federal levels. He explained that these roles have given him valuable insight into policy development, implementation processes, and the workings of government institutions.
Restating his readiness for the challenge ahead, Opara stated that he possesses the mental strength, financial stability, and physical energy necessary to effectively serve as a senator. He described himself as a self-sufficient candidate entering the race with a clear focus on delivering results and advancing the interests of the Owerri Zone.
