Senator Orji Uzor Kalu has defended the recent visit of the Catholic Bishops to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, describing the meeting as a genuine engagement aimed at providing honest advice to the nation’s leader.
The former Abia State governor said the Catholic Bishops remain the conscience of the nation and are respected for speaking the truth without fear or favour. According to him, their advice is not designed to support or oppose any government but to guide leaders toward decisions that will improve the lives of Nigerians.
Kalu said there was nothing unusual about the bishops visiting President Tinubu, stressing that religious leaders have always engaged with governments to discuss issues affecting the country and offer constructive guidance.
He acknowledged that Nigeria is currently facing economic difficulties, noting that many citizens are struggling with rising costs and other challenges. However, he argued that the situation cannot be blamed entirely on President Tinubu, explaining that while the administration has made efforts to stabilise the macroeconomy, the impact is yet to fully reflect in the daily lives of ordinary Nigerians.
The senator said the visit by the bishops should be seen as a positive development that would encourage the President to work harder in addressing the concerns of citizens.
According to Kalu, some politicians may present a more favourable picture of the country’s situation to the President, but the Catholic Bishops would always communicate the realities on the ground. He maintained that the bishops’ commitment to truth and conscience makes their voice important in national affairs.
He also corrected what he described as a misconception regarding the leadership of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria, stating that Cardinal John Onaiyekan is not the President of the conference.
Kalu further explained that whatever differences may exist between the bishops and government representatives do not change the importance of the message delivered by the clerics. He urged those working with President Tinubu to carefully study the bishops’ concerns and develop solutions that would bring relief and improved living conditions to Nigerians.
The senator said open discussions between government leaders and respected institutions such as the Catholic Church are necessary for addressing the country’s challenges and building a better future for citizens.
