Taking decisive action amidst Nigeria’s ongoing power crisis, Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu has summoned the heads of major electricity distribution and transmission companies. Adelabu’s initiative responds to the troubling decline in electricity supply nationwide, despite recent increases in power generation.

Expressing profound disappointment over the lack of discernible progress in resolving the country’s power challenges, Adelabu emphasizes the urgent need for a long-term solution to the persistent blackouts plaguing major cities across Nigeria.

Adelabu’s summons targets key figures, including the Chief Executives of the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) and the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC), as well as the Managing Director of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN). The objective of the meeting is to address the root causes of the worsening power supply situation and collectively devise effective strategies to overcome the challenges.

Despite concerted efforts to boost power generation, Adelabu highlights systemic issues hindering the distribution of electricity. He cites instances of inadequate distribution by certain companies and rampant vandalism of power infrastructure in regions such as Abuja, Benin, Port Harcourt, and Ibadan, exacerbating the crisis.

Adelabu underscores his commitment to holding distribution companies accountable for their performance, warning of severe consequences, including license revocation, for willful non-performance. Furthermore, he instructs TCN to prioritize repair works on damaged transmission towers and power lines to enhance supply in affected areas.

The Minister also addresses financial challenges within the sector, revealing plans to settle outstanding debts owed to power generation and gas supply companies. Resolving these financial burdens is expected to alleviate strain and contribute to improved generation levels nationwide.

Adelabu concludes by urging patience from electricity consumers as the government works tirelessly to address the issues and deliver better service to all Nigerians. He reiterates his determination to confront the challenges head-on and ensure a more reliable and sustainable power supply for the nation.
