Call for Reintroduction of IROMA and Clean and Green Policy in Imo State: Neglect of Maintenance Culture Hampering Development

The urgent need to reintroduce the Imo State Roads Maintenance Agency (IROMA) and the Clean and Green policy has become a critical issue for the progress of Imo State. Over the years, a declining maintenance culture has steadily reversed the state’s infrastructural and environmental gains. The consequences are evident, with numerous pressing challenges undermining public welfare and urban order.

One of the most visible concerns is the non-functionality of traffic lights, which has led to chaos and inefficiencies on major roads. Illegal motor parks and street trading, particularly along Douglas Road, have become common, further worsening traffic congestion and compromising pedestrian safety. These issues not only inconvenience residents but also create an unsafe environment for businesses to thrive.

Additionally, the former New Market in Owerri, once a thriving commercial area, has been left to deteriorate. The site, which could have been redeveloped for public use, has instead become a hideout for criminal activity. This neglect is symptomatic of a broader issue of poor governance and lack of attention to public spaces and infrastructure.

Reintroducing IROMA and fully implementing the Clean and Green policy would address these challenges head-on. With a dedicated focus on maintaining roads, public facilities, and keeping the state clean, Imo could once again become a model of urban planning and development. Regular maintenance and strict enforcement of environmental regulations would not only restore order to the state’s capital but also promote safety and enhance the quality of life for its citizens.

The time has come for the Imo State government to prioritize sustainable development, starting with a renewed commitment to infrastructure and environmental management. By doing so, the state can pave the way for long-term progress and improved livability for all.
