The Nigerian Air Force has confirmed the successful elimination of more than 35 suspected terrorists in a series of coordinated airstrikes near the country’s northeastern border with Cameroon. The strikes were carried out on Saturday, August 23, targeting four identified terrorist hideouts in Kumshe, Borno State  a known hotspot for insurgent activity.

According to military officials, the airstrikes were launched after intelligence reports revealed that terrorists had regrouped in the area following a failed attempt to ambush Nigerian ground troops. The precision strikes were designed to dismantle the militants’ operational bases and disrupt future attacks.

These precision strikes neutralized over 35 terrorists and destroyed four insurgent camps, a senior Air Force official stated. “The operation significantly degraded the enemy’s capacity and helped re-establish control and communication with our ground forces.

Though the Nigerian military did not specify which group the fighters belonged to, the region is frequently targeted by Boko Haram and its offshoot, the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP). Both groups have exploited the porous border with Cameroon to launch cross-border attacks and establish supply routes.

Security analysts view the operation as a major success in Nigeria’s counterinsurgency efforts. The ability to simultaneously hit multiple high-value targets shows improved intelligence gathering and operational coordination between air and ground forces.

The Nigerian government reaffirmed its commitment to eradicating terrorism in the northeast and strengthening regional security ties with neighboring countries, particularly Cameroon, to prevent cross-border movements by insurgent groups.

This latest operation marks a significant tactical victory for the Nigerian military and sends a strong signal of renewed momentum in the country’s long-standing fight against extremist violence in the Lake Chad region.
