The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced another upward review of passport fees, exactly one year after implementing a similar policy in 2024. This new development is set to take effect on September 1, 2025, and will significantly increase the cost of obtaining a Nigerian international passport for applicants within the country.
Under the new pricing structure, the cost of a 32-page, 5-year validity passport has been raised from ₦50,000 to ₦100,000, while the 64-page, 10-year validity passport has gone up from ₦100,000 to ₦200,000. This marks a 100% increase in passport application fees, following the last review which took effect in September 2024.
The Nigerian Immigration Service clarified that the revised fees apply only to applicants within Nigeria. Fees for Nigerians in the diaspora remain unchanged for now.
The government justifies the price adjustment as necessary to improve service delivery, maintain the quality of passport production, and sustain operations amid rising operational costs. However, the back-to-back increments in less than two years have sparked concerns among citizens, many of whom view the changes as burdensome in the face of ongoing economic challenges.
This latest development comes at a time when inflation and the cost of living are already putting pressure on many households, raising questions about the timing and necessity of another fee hike.
