Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has pledged renewed efforts toward the release of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, stating that significant progress has been made and his freedom may soon become a reality.

During a recent media interaction, Governor Otti described himself as “Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s governor,” noting that as the elected leader of Kanu’s home state, he feels personally and politically responsible for actively supporting efforts to secure his release. He emphasized that serious engagements are underway behind the scenes, involving key stakeholders at both state and federal levels.

Otti explained that while much of the work cannot yet be disclosed publicly, discussions are ongoing and moving in a positive direction. He urged supporters and the general public to remain calm and patient, adding that strategic diplomacy often requires quiet negotiation.

The governor also highlighted increased collaboration among South East governors, stating that the regional leadership is now more united in advocating for justice, equity, and peace in the matter of Kanu’s prolonged detention. According to him, the issue is being handled with caution and seriousness, considering its legal and political complexities.

Nnamdi Kanu has been held in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) since June 2021 following his arrest and extradition from Kenya. His continued detention has sparked widespread agitation, particularly in the South East, leading to economic disruptions and repeated calls for his release from both local and international observers.

Governor Otti’s statement is the latest in a series of growing political efforts to address the situation. Legal experts, however, point out that any resolution will likely require a combination of court rulings, executive intervention, and consensus among relevant authorities.

As expectations rise, many Nigerians—especially those in the South East—are watching closely to see whether the renewed push led by Governor Otti and other regional leaders will finally result in the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu after more than four years in detention.
