Nigerian troops have engaged in a fierce gun battle with suspected bandits in Benue State, leading to the recovery of weapons, communication devices, and other items believed to be used in criminal activities.
The operation took place in a known hotspot for criminal activity, where armed groups have been linked to ongoing attacks, kidnappings, and robberies in the region. Acting on credible intelligence, the troops launched a surprise raid on a suspected hideout, where they were met with heavy gunfire from the bandits.
Following a sustained exchange of gunfire, the soldiers overpowered the assailants, forcing some to flee while others reportedly sustained injuries. During a search of the area, the troops recovered several AK-47 magazines, 29 mobile phones, multiple SIM cards, motorcycles, and other items suspected to have been used to coordinate illegal operations.
Although no casualties were reported among the security personnel, sources said some of the fleeing suspects may have escaped with gunshot wounds. A search and tracking operation has since been launched in nearby bush paths to apprehend the remaining members of the gang.
A military source confirmed the success of the operation and emphasized the army’s commitment to restoring peace and security in the region. The official noted that the seizure of communication tools and weapons would significantly disrupt the operational capabilities of the criminal network.
Residents of the affected communities, who have lived under constant threat from these groups, expressed relief at the military intervention. Many described the presence of the troops as reassuring and called for continued patrols to prevent future attacks.
Authorities are encouraging local communities to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies by reporting suspicious movements and sharing information that could help track down criminal elements still at large.
This operation is part of a broader campaign by security forces to combat banditry and violent crime across Nigeria’s North Central region, where several states, including Benue, have been severely affected by insecurity.
