A mining accident in Ebonyi State has left three people dead and four others seriously injured. The incident occurred on Saturday at a mining site in the Enyim Agalegu community, located in Ikwo Local Government Area.
The mining pit suddenly caved in while several workers were at the site, trapping them under earth and debris. Residents and community members rushed to help, pulling some victims out and calling for medical assistance.
Rescue efforts recovered three people who had died in the collapse, while four others were taken to a nearby hospital with serious injuries. The bodies of the deceased were taken to a local mortuary.
The mining site is under the lease of a private company, but illegal mining has reportedly been ongoing in the area. Authorities have warned that unauthorized mining is dangerous and can lead to accidents.
Local officials and community leaders have called attention to the recurring accidents caused by unsafe mining practices. The incident highlights the need for proper supervision, safer mining operations, and better coordination between government agencies, licensed operators, and local communities to prevent further tragedies.
