In conformity with Kebekache Women Development and Resource Centre, that carried out sensitization and campaigning program for women and their families to embark on self- sufficiency gardening, and the unveiling benefits that go along with it, Objective Media and Gender Affairs have come up with wake-up calls to women to grow their own foods and natural spices. Kebekache Women Development and Resource Centre whose Executive Director named Chief Dr. Emem Okon is a non-governmental organization characterized by community action, education, women’s and human rights advocacy.

In its recent workshop on climate change mitigation and adaptation on 27 – 30 October, 2025, the organization emphasized on food security as one of its focus areas, and urged the women to carry out their campaign towards sensitizing other women and the society on the need to engage in homegrown production of food and natural spices. Based on that, Objective Media and Gender Affairs are calling on all the women of the South-East: Imo, Anambra, Abia and Ebonyi State, as well as all other women of the South-South to embrace home farming and cultivation of natural spices, to foster economic independence, strengthen food security and improve health. There are a lot of benefits for families in growing their own food for their living.

By growing their own food, women and their families can reduce external reliance of food sources which is sometimes unreliable and guarantee themselves the quality of food they consume. Some individuals depend on home farming for their entire livelihood.

As a small-scale intensive gardening, home farming is a viable career path where some individuals generate their income with financial independence, by converting their environment into a business production centre.

Concentrating on frequent rotation of crops, high-value products, and fast turn-over livestock, financial independence can be achieved by experts, by selling surplus products, after reducing their own food expenses.

Home farming offers a well grounded, consistent provision of fresh food, decreasing dependence on supply chains, availability of food store and providing fluctuating market prices.
