Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo has ordered the temporary closure of Nkwo Nnewi Market, also known as the New Auto Spare Parts Association (NASPA) Market, for one week following traders’ refusal to comply with the state’s directive to disregard Monday sit-at-home instructions. The decision underscores the government’s determination to ensure uninterrupted business activities and strengthen market compliance.

The market was officially closed from midnight on Monday, February 23, 2026, and is scheduled to reopen on Monday, March 2, 2026. During this period, both traders and customers are prohibited from accessing the market. The state government explained that many market operators continued to observe the sit-at-home practice, despite repeated calls for normal trading operations on Mondays.

The shutdown was supervised by top government officials, including Chief Evarist Uba, Special Adviser on Trade and Markets; Dr. Law Mefor, Commissioner for Information; AVM Ben Chiobi (retd.), Special Adviser on Security; and Nnewi Mayor Echezona Anazodo. Traders and the public were urged to adhere strictly to the closure to avoid confrontations with security agents enforcing the order.

Authorities warned that failure to comply when the market reopens could lead to additional sanctions, including extended closures. This measure follows a similar temporary shutdown of Onitsha Main Market, highlighting the state government’s ongoing efforts to end disruptions caused by non-sanctioned sit-at-home orders and promote regular business activities.

The state government stated that the action is aimed at encouraging continuous economic activity, maintaining orderly market operations, and supporting traders’ livelihoods. By enforcing adherence to official directives, the government seeks to strengthen commerce, ensure market stability, and foster confidence among traders and customers across Anambra State.
