Diaspora Group Urges Mexican Government to Reject Reno Omokri as Nigeria’s Ambassador

A Nigerian diaspora group has written to the government of Mexico, asking it to reject the appointment of Reno Omokri as Nigeria’s ambassador to the country. The group said the request was made through a formal letter sent to Mexican authorities, raising concerns about Omokri’s past political comments and public positions.

The letter was reportedly addressed to the President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum. In the message, the petitioner argued that Omokri’s past statements about Nigerian political leaders have created doubts about whether he should represent Nigeria in a diplomatic role.

According to the group, Omokri had previously been a strong critic of Nigeria’s current president, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, especially during the period surrounding the 2023 presidential election. The petition also noted that his later show of support for the administration has led to questions from some Nigerians about his consistency and suitability for public office.

The group added that ambassadors are expected to show professionalism, discipline, and a public record that reflects well on the country they represent. For this reason, they urged the Mexican government to carefully review the nomination before granting approval.

However, there has been no official confirmation that Mexico has rejected the nomination. In diplomatic practice, an ambassador-designate must first receive formal consent, known as agrément, from the host country before assuming office.

Omokri, who once served as an aide to former Nigerian president Goodluck Jonathan, is also known as a political commentator and author. His nomination as Nigeria’s ambassador to Mexico has attracted different reactions from Nigerians both at home and abroad.

For now, the process is still ongoing, and the final decision on whether Omokri will take up the ambassadorial post will depend on the approval of the Mexican government.
