The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has rejected the position of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on a recent Court of Appeal judgment, accusing the electoral body of misinterpreting the ruling in an ongoing leadership dispute within the party.
INEC had stated that its actions—including the removal of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) names from its official portal—were based on the court’s directive to maintain the status quo until the case is resolved. The ADC, however, argues that this interpretation is incorrect and does not reflect the actual meaning of the judgment.
Party officials say INEC’s decision has disrupted its leadership structure and created uncertainty within the party at a critical political moment. They described the move as inconsistent and raised concerns about possible external influence on the commission’s decision.
In response, the ADC says it is considering legal steps, including returning to court to seek clarification and challenge INEC’s actions. The party maintains that the situation should be addressed through proper legal interpretation rather than administrative decisions that affect its internal affairs.
Despite the dispute, the ADC says its political activities will continue across the country as it prepares for the 2027 general elections. The party indicated that it will proceed with its plans while the legal issues surrounding its leadership are being addressed.
The development reflects ongoing challenges within Nigeria’s political space, where internal disputes and legal interpretations often shape party operations. The outcome of the case is expected to determine the recognized leadership of the party and its position ahead of the next election cycle.
