The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has opened up on the political crisis between him and Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, saying he had initially planned to support the governor for two terms but alleged that the intervention of external forces altered the political arrangement.
Wike made the disclosure while addressing supporters, where he reflected on the events that led to the breakdown of the once-close political relationship between both leaders. According to him, his intention was to ensure continuity in governance and preserve the political structure that produced the current administration.
The former Rivers State governor said he had no reason to oppose Fubara’s administration at the outset, insisting that he had worked tirelessly to support his emergence as governor with the expectation that the administration would build on the achievements recorded during his tenure.
According to Wike, the political crisis began when individuals outside the established political family allegedly started influencing the governor and encouraging actions that created tension within the state.
“I wanted him to complete his second term because that was the understanding. Unfortunately, external forces came in and changed everything,” Wike said.
He alleged that some political actors exploited the situation for their personal interests, leading to disagreements that eventually widened the gap between him and his successor.
Despite the disagreement, Wike maintained that his actions have always been guided by the desire to protect the interests of Rivers State. He said political differences should not be allowed to undermine governance or slow down the pace of development.
The minister called on political leaders and stakeholders to embrace dialogue, mutual respect, and unity, stressing that peace remains essential for sustainable development and political stability in the state.
He also urged supporters to remain calm and law-abiding, expressing confidence that the political challenges facing Rivers State would eventually be resolved through democratic processes and constructive engagement.
The political rift between Wike and Fubara has remained one of the most closely watched developments in Nigeria’s political landscape. The disagreement has reshaped political alignments within Rivers State and attracted widespread interest from political observers across the country.
Although several reconciliation efforts have been initiated by prominent stakeholders, both camps have continued to express differing views on the issues at the heart of the dispute.
