No fewer than 30 women and girls were reportedly abducted on Saturday night after armed bandits invaded Chacho community in Wurno Local Government Area of Sokoto State.
According to residents, the attackers stormed the community in large numbers, shooting indiscriminately as people fled for safety. The gunmen then moved through several homes, seizing women and girls and marching them into the surrounding forest before security personnel could respond.
Eyewitnesses said the victims include young girls, mothers, and female relatives who were indoors when the assault began. At least one resident was injured during the chaos, following an attempt to escape the sporadic gunfire.
The incident has triggered fear and anxiety among villagers, who say attacks have become more frequent and devastating in the region. Community leaders are calling for urgent government intervention, stressing that rural residents remain vulnerable due to limited security presence in the area.
Authorities have yet to confirm the exact number of abductees, and no official statement had been issued at the time of filing this report. Rescue operations are expected to intensify as security agencies work to track the movements of the bandits and secure the safe return of the victims.
The attack adds to the growing wave of banditry and kidnappings plaguing northwestern Nigeria, heightening concerns about safety and the worsening humanitarian situation in affected communities.
