Senator Marafa Resigns from APC, Citing Neglect of Zamfara and Worsening Insecurity

Former Zamfara Central Senator, Kabiru Garba Marafa, has announced his resignation from the All Progressives Congress (APC), along with his entire political structure in Zamfara State. Marafa made this decision public through a communiqué released after a two-day meeting of his political forum, held in Kaduna from August 27 to 28, 2025.

Marafa played a key role in the 2023 general elections as the state coordinator of the Tinubu-Shettima Presidential Campaign in Zamfara. Despite helping to deliver substantial votes for President Bola Tinubu, Marafa says the state has been sidelined by the federal government.

In the communiqué, his forum expressed disappointment over what it called the marginalisation of Zamfara. It noted that despite the state’s electoral support, it was only given a minor federal appointment, while other states that performed poorly during the election received more influential positions. The group also criticized President Tinubu for failing to visit the state since taking office.

Another major reason cited for the resignation was the growing insecurity in Zamfara. According to Marafa, the state has become one of the most dangerous in Nigeria, with frequent attacks by bandits. He referenced data showing that Zamfara recorded over 1,200 kidnappings in 2024 alone, and claimed that dozens of villages had recently been attacked with little response from the federal government.

Marafa also accused the current administration of using Zamfara for political gain and abandoning the state afterward. He described the government’s approach as “use and dump,” and said it was time to withdraw from a party that does not value the region’s support.

Although Marafa did not reveal which political party he will join next, he said consultations are ongoing. He promised to announce his next steps soon, assuring the people of Zamfara that he and his team will continue to fight for their interests.

This development marks a significant shift in the political landscape of Zamfara State and could weaken the APC’s position in the North-West region ahead of future elections.
