by admin

Diogo Jota, the highly regarded Liverpool and Portugal forward, has tragically died at the age of 28 following a fatal car accident in northwestern Spain. His younger brother, André Jota, 26, also lost his life in the crash.

The accident occurred shortly after midnight on Thursday near the municipality of Cernadilla, in the province of Zamora. According to local authorities, the brothers were travelling in a Lamborghini when the vehicle reportedly suffered a high-speed tyre blowout while overtaking another car. The vehicle lost control, veered off the motorway, and burst into flames upon impact.

Eyewitnesses said the crash caused a large fire that quickly spread to nearby vegetation. Emergency services responded swiftly, but both brothers were pronounced dead at the scene due to the severity of the crash and the fire that engulfed the car.

The tragedy comes just days after Diogo Jota celebrated his wedding. He married his long-time partner, Rute Cardoso, on June 22. The couple shared three young children. His brother, André, was also a professional footballer, playing for Portuguese second-division side Penafiel.

Jota’s death has sent shockwaves through the football world. Known for his technical brilliance, sharp instinct in front of goal, and tireless work ethic, Jota was a fan favorite at Anfield and a respected figure among his teammates and opponents alike.

He joined Liverpool in 2020 from Wolverhampton Wanderers in a £41 million move and quickly established himself as a key attacking player under then-manager Jürgen Klopp. Over five seasons with the Reds, Jota scored 65 goals in 182 appearances and was instrumental in several trophy-winning campaigns. He helped Liverpool secure the Premier League title in the 2024–25 season, contributing six goals, and also lifted the FA Cup, Carabao Cup (twice), and the Community Shield.

Internationally, Jota earned 49 caps for Portugal and featured in numerous major tournaments. His final appearance came just weeks ago in the UEFA Nations League final, where Portugal defeated Spain.

Tributes are pouring in from across the footballing community, with teammates, clubs, and fans expressing their grief and celebrating the legacy of a player remembered not only for his talent, but also for his humility and commitment to the game.

Further statements from Liverpool FC and the Portuguese Football Federation are expected as the global football community mourns the heartbreaking loss of one of its brightest stars.
