The National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, has warned former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, and other political figures to stop involving Nigeria’s security agencies in political matters.
In a statement released on Sunday, Ribadu said recent attempts by some individuals to use security institutions for political purposes are dangerous and unacceptable.
He stressed that security agencies are meant to serve and protect the country, not to be used for settling political scores or advancing partisan interests.
Ribadu’s warning comes as political tensions rise, with some actors accusing federal agencies of bias. He said using the military, police, or intelligence services for politics could damage their credibility and weaken public trust.
Although El-Rufai was not named directly in the statement, the warning follows comments linked to him and his associates, who have recently questioned certain security-related decisions by the federal government.
Ribadu called on political leaders to show responsibility and avoid statements or actions that could undermine the professionalism of the country’s security institutions.
He reminded all public figures that Nigeria’s peace and unity should come before personal or political interests, and that national security must not be politicized.
This warning highlights growing concern within the federal government about the need to keep sensitive institutions neutral, especially as political activities pick up across the country.
