US Senator Ted Cruz Urges White House to Sanction Nigerian Officials Over Sharia and Blasphemy Laws

US Senator Ted Cruz has called on the White House to impose targeted sanctions on Nigerian government officials and 12 states that enforce Sharia-based blasphemy laws, citing severe violations of religious freedom in the country.

Senator Cruz commended the designation of Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern under the International Religious Freedom Act. He argued that the enforcement of blasphemy laws and the alleged persecution of Christians in certain Nigerian states warrants strong action from the United States.

To formalize these measures, Cruz introduced the Nigeria Religious Freedom Accountability Act of 2025, which seeks to impose sanctions such as visa restrictions and asset freezes on officials found complicit in facilitating or condoning religious violence. The senator also pledged to publicly name Nigerian officials responsible for such policies, signaling a tough stance on religious freedom violations.

The United States must hold Nigerian officials accountable for actions that suppress religious freedom and endanger innocent lives, Cruz said, emphasizing the moral responsibility of the US to protect human rights globally.

The Nigerian government, however, has strongly rejected these claims. Officials argue that the country faces complex security challenges including terrorism, banditry, and communal violence that cannot be attributed solely to religious persecution. They warned that labeling Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern does not reflect the reality on the ground and could harm diplomatic relations.

Religious freedom advocates note that at least 12 Nigerian states have adopted Sharia-based legal codes that include blasphemy provisions, making the CPC designation a critical tool for international oversight. Experts say that if sanctions are implemented, Nigerian officials could face asset freezes, travel restrictions, and heightened scrutiny, which may pressure the country to review or reform the enforcement of Sharia and blasphemy laws.

However, analysts caution that the situation in Nigeria is complex and involves multiple socio-political factors beyond religion. Sanctions, they warn, could have unintended consequences such as disrupting counter-terrorism cooperation or affecting humanitarian aid.

The introduction of the Nigeria Religious Freedom Accountability Act reflects US lawmakers intent to create a structured, long-term mechanism for addressing human rights concerns in Nigeria. Observers are closely watching the Biden administration’s response, as it carries significant legal, diplomatic, and geopolitical implications for both countries.
