The family of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has dismissed reports claiming that he rejected a dialogue initiative proposed by former Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha, to address the lingering South-East crisis.
Speaking on the matter, Kanu’s younger brother, Emmanuel Kanu, described such claims as false and misleading, insisting that at no time did Nnamdi Kanu turn down any genuine call for dialogue aimed at restoring peace and stability in the region.
According to him, the narrative that Kanu “snubbed” Okorocha was deliberately misrepresented and does not reflect the true position of the IPOB leader.
Emmanuel Kanu explained that while there may have been differences in opinions or approaches between the parties involved, these differences should not be interpreted as a rejection of dialogue.
He emphasized that his brother has consistently maintained that meaningful and sincere engagement remains the most effective path to resolving the political and security challenges confronting the South-East.
He further noted that Nnamdi Kanu has always advocated for discussions that are transparent, inclusive, and genuinely focused on addressing the grievances of the people, rather than symbolic or politically motivated meetings.
According to him, dialogue must be rooted in honesty and a clear commitment to justice to achieve lasting peace.
The clarification comes amid growing public debate and speculation over efforts by political leaders and stakeholders to de-escalate tensions in the South-East.
Analysts say the statement from Kanu’s family may help refocus attention on the need for coordinated and credible dialogue involving the federal government and key regional actors.
As calls for peace continue, Emmanuel Kanu urged the public to disregard unverified reports and emphasized that any serious effort toward dialogue should be encouraged in the interest of stability and development in the South-East.
